Docents

The docent experience provides University of Houston students and arts professionals with valuable teaching experience. Docents give dynamic, interactive tours of current Blaffer Art Museum exhibitions to college students and K-12 school groups as well as to community groups of adults and kids. Students serving as museum docents may be eligible for The Minette and Jerome Robinson Scholarship.

With support from the Martha Meier Scholarship Endowment Fund, free Guided Tours of museum exhibitions spark discussion through inquiry based learning supported by content delivered via iPads. Tours are free for university groups, K-12 classes, and community groups of 10 or more with the goal of serving about 40-60 tour group per year. Tours are customized to meet the curricular assignments and interests of particular groups, and often include companion studio art-making workshops. Knowledgeable docents are arts professionals as well as advanced undergraduates and graduate students at UH studying art history, fine arts, and arts education. Additionally, each year a museum docent’s academic study at University of Houston is supported through funding from the Minnette and Jerome Robinson Scholarship. Innovatively, docents utilize iPads to present content, which sometimes including short video clips of artist and curator interviews as well as related images and supplemental material.
